A language of making
Dairy of making
Day 15.
Well the artwork is finished.
Some of the things I have learnt from the making process are:
It’s hard to relax, let go and trust the process, when you need to produce a piece of artwork for an exhibition.
The fact that I didn’t have a design in mind when I started, made the process harder more stressful and peppered with doubt.
Some time was wasted (was it really wasted though) making elements and trying things that did not end up in the final piece, I would say 5 days in total.
It was exciting to work in this way, seeing how the materials communicated with each other, which then determined my next step.
Making the piece to be accessible for people with visual impairments and sight loss, meant having a bright colour palette and creating contrast but at the same time making the piece cohesive to look at for fully sighted people required thought.
Having the element of tactility in the piece, meant careful considerations were given to the materials properties and placement.
Wanting to create a sustainable artwork (made from secondhand materials), which evokes a sense of the past ( speak of their history)and includes colour and texture, meant I really had to reflect on material choices.
I learnt so much (which I will reflect on further another time), but the main two here are:
You can do a lot on a domestic sewing machine.
And
Trust the process.
