The language of making

Day 2

As all the Cherry Blossom are being blown from the trees on this windy day, it seemed a good time to work with the pink sateen fabric (a vintage curtain) to at least attempt to capture the essence of the cherry blossoms for a moment longer.

Deciding to work on sections experiment in small areas with different techniques, why? – not so overwhelming gives me a chance to try different processes, see what I can achieve, test out things (what are things?) to test out actions, moments, elements. Are there cohesive elements? Or does the contrast work? Building a collection.

Cut, pin, sew. Piece work, repetition, monotonous sewing, building piles of pieces, my mind wanders.

Continually amazed by the embodied knowledge my hands hold, as my mind loosely wanders, my hands, fingers and eyes carry automatically on with the work.

I have unpicked a bit today. And said “let’s see what happens” more than once.

I am quite overcome by the end of the session. I was aiming for one outcome but when ironing it I discovered the wrong side had an interesting pattern and texture. I decided to explore it. The final piece is beautiful in my opinion.

I go from thinking this is genius to what the hell am I doing, this is a crazy way to work.

I guess time will tell….
